Sinking Rooms | 2019
VR
This work begins with the memory of the day I visited my grandmother’s room after her passing and the subsequent funeral. The room was filled with her belongings, each item imbued with countless memories. Family photos that once adorned the walls seemed to lose their meaning in her absence. The objects and the space they occupied were suffused with her presence, yet her absence turned them into mere echoes of a once-lived reality.
Before the room was to be sorted and cleared, I wanted to capture and preserve the traces of her presence that lingered there. My aim was to create a space where, even after her physical belongings were gone, memories of her could be revisited and remembered.
At the heart of this work is the use of Virtual Reality (VR) technology. Through VR, viewers can immerse themselves in a faithful recreation of my grandmother’s room, experiencing the space and its lingering traces as if they were truly there. This virtual environment allows participants to encounter the room’s sensory details and emotional atmosphere, providing a means to leave their own marks within a space that no longer has a physical owner.
This work transcends a mere reproduction of my grandmother’s room. It explores themes of loss, memory, and the desire to preserve and reflect upon what has been lost. The room, now a repository of memories, is redefined through VR, offering a chance for viewers to reconnect with the intangible essence of past experiences.
